Aaron “Wheelz” Fotheringham
Aaron ‘Wheelz’ Fotheringham is a professional WCMX – (Wheelchair Motocross) rider from Las Vegas Nevada. Born with Spina Bifida, a birth defect of the spinal cord, Aaron was left with limited use of his legs. Despite his physical struggles, at an early age he seemed to be able to find ways to adapt and overcome any obstacle that came his way. Early on Aaron used a “walker” and then crutches to get around, eventually at the age of 8 years old he started using a wheelchair full-time. Aaron’s first real experience at a skatepark was in December of 2000 when his Dad and older brother Brian helped him to the top of a quarter pipe at their local skatepark. After some trial and error 8 year old Aaron rolled away from his first drop into a ramp and it was at that moment he was hooked. Where most people see a wheelchair as a limitation – to Aaron it meant freedom. In 2005, he was given the opportunity to enter BMX competitions and managed to win a few of them. He loved the rush of competition and hoped to one day have other people on wheelchairs to ride with. Throughout the years Aaron has challenged himself to try progressively more difficult tricks. July 13th of 2006 he pulled off the world’s first backflip on a wheelchair and four years later he followed that up with the first double backflip on a wheelchair. As if that wasn’t enough in 2011 while touring with Nitro Circus in New Zealand he landed his first front flip. August 25, 2012 he shocked Brazilians by jumping and successfully landing a 50ft jump over the Mega Ramp on his chair. In 2018, he went on to land his first ever “Flair” (backflip 180) at Woodward West. The very next year he took it even further by landing a Backflip 360 off the Mega Ramp in New Zealand on March 23, 2019. Most recently, in New York, he landed the DOUBLE backflip 360 off the Giganta Ramp on September 8, 2022.

Apa Sherpa
Apa Sherpa was born with the name Lhakpa Tenzing Sherpa in Thame, a small village in the Everest region of Nepal. At the age of 3 months, he and his mother were caught in an avalanche and Lhakpa was thrown from the basket on his mother’s back and came to rest under an ice ledge. After his mother found him unhurt, she took him to the Lama to pray and give thanks. It was at this point that Lhakpa was renamed “Apa” which means “much loved”. Apa always wanted to be a doctor, but at the age of 12, his father died. Following his father’s death, Apa had to take up the responsibilities of his family, consisting of his mother , two sisters, and three young brothers. He dropped out of school and started working as a high altitude porter for mountaineering groups. His climbing career began in 1985, when he worked as a kitchen boy and porter for various groups. He was not given to opportunity to summit Everest until 1990. His first summit team included Rob Hall and Peter Hillary, the son of Sir Edmond Hillary. He continued to climb and summit Everest 21 times which gave him the world record for most summits. He held that record until 2018 when it was surpassed by a fellow climber from Thame. Apa was a successful guide, never loosing a client to the mountain. In 1996, Apa was asked by his friend Rob Hall to join the group famous 1996 expedition that ended in tragedy. Apa’s wife needed him to stay home during that time to finish construction on their home. Had it not been for her, his fate could have turned out much differently. Today Apa is retired and is focused on giving back to his homeland. In 2012 he started the Apa Sherpa Foundation with a focus on educating young Sherpa children so that they have a choice for their future endeavors.
